Shoah Memorial Competition, Lyon

International competition 2nd prize, 2024

Titled Ascent, the work utilizes right-angled triangles, with which I have been preoccupied for many years, to evoke the elevation of souls, as phrased in the Jewish funerary prayer accompanying the metaphysical journey into the afterlife. Synthesizing delicacy and roughness, the assemblage of fragile glass and porcelain triangles suspended within rusty meshes conveys both the vulnerability and the endurance manifested in the tragic events. The large triangles are composed of 6,102 modular units with integrated Soul Candle lights – one for each of the murdered Jews of the Lyon area – transforming the gauzy daytime appearance into a forceful 'fire inscription' after dark.
