Chinese Massacre Memorial, Los Angeles
International competition, 2016
The design of this entry derives from the ritual dragon dance – a continuous body consisting of several vertebrae in shifting positions – coinciding with my preoccupation with triangles set in different vertical-horizontal relations to produce different existential conditions. The structure thereby assembled is not wholly figurative, nor is it completely abstract. And while it does not fear shapes and their entailed associations, it nevertheless transcends a certain limited, prescribed reading, owing to its multilayered meaning; from the basic, structural realm of facing gravity, to notions of collectivity made of individuals, and to the overcoming of loss, managing to rise again.
