Entitled ascent, the project utilizes the idiosyncratic language of right-angled traingles, with which I have been preoccupied for many years now, to refer to the ascent of the souls, the ritual Jewish prayer held at funerals and remembrance days, accompanying the metaphysical journey of the deceased in the after-life.
Synthesizing delicate fragility and rough hardiness, the material association of glass-and-porcelain triangles hovering amidst rusted-steel meshes conveys both the vulnerability and the resilience reflected in the tragic historical events.
The large triangles consist of 6,102 smaller identical units of standing triangles represnting the number of Jews from Lyon area murdered in the holocaust, with integrated "soul candle" lighting for each.
